Rendcomb College Senior School - The Curriculum "Academic results open doors" Excellent teaching is our priority and Rendcomb College is committed to a policy of small class sizes to ensure we can give each individual pupil personal care and encouragement. Class sizes average about 15-18 in the Lower School and often much fewer in the Sixth Form. At the heart of our educational philosophy is the pupil-parent-teacher partnership and parents are keen to be involved in helping pupils realise their full potential. Our code of discipline is firm and fair. We expect and receive kind and sensible behaviour and we can deliver a balanced education, developing pupils who are responsible, rounded and well qualified for further study or employment. Years 1 - 3 (ages 11 - 14) back to top Our aim in these years is to provide a broadly based curriculum, reflecting the spirit and fundamental structure of the National Curriculum. Pupils study a wide range of subjects in 39 periods of 40 minutes duration each per week. Subjects studied are:
Students are setted in English, Mathematics and French in these years and all subjects are taught by specialists in that field. Three afternoons of games completes the programme. Years 4 - 5 back to top ![]() Most pupils take 10 GCSE's in this two year programme. These subjects are chosen at the end of the Third form after lengthy consultation at a GCSE options evening, with tutors and the Director of Studies. Students normally have a free choice of subjects beyond the core subjects, though study of at least one modern foreign language is recommended. In the science course either Triple or Dual Award certification is taken by most pupils. These subjects are taught in 37 periods of 40 minutes each and three afternoons of games and one period of both P.S.H.E and R.E. complete the programme. CORE SUBJECTS:
OPTIONAL SUBJECTS (4 chosen from) :
Academic Support and Learning "A positive attitude to learning" Every three or four weeks there is an assessment of effort and achievement in each subject with the release of grades. Each pupil meets with their academic tutor on a weekly basis to discuss study skills, target-setting, pastoral issues or any area of concern. This helps us to monitor progress, give encouragement and tackle any difficulties that may arise. This ensures that each pupil has the right balance of support, motivation and praise needed to maximise their full potential. Achievement and good progress are rewarded by Headmaster's commendations, which are communicated to parents by a personalised letter. This programme is supported by termly reports, pupil's self-assessment and parental reply slips. All pupils are issued with a prep diary and a termly prep timetable. Prep time starts at around 1 hour at the lower end of the school to two hours by G.C.S.E. In the sixth form pupils should spend around 6 hours a week working on each subject outside lesson time. Regular academic review meetings are held to assess progress of individuals and an Academic Curriculum Committee looks at major national academic developments and how these can be implemented to the benefit of pupils at Rendcomb. |
